Health Sciences Presentation

The Department of Health Sciences offers four different degree programs that provide students with the skills and knowledge to meet the changing needs of society. Degree programs are offered in Child Health, Community Health, Medical Sciences, and Public Health. Attend this session to learn more about our unique programs and experiential learning opportunities. Brock Functional Inclusive Training Centre (Bfit) – Health Sciences Tour

Bfit pursues innovative, multi-disciplinary research and provides supervised community exercise programs to improve health in older adults, cardiac patients, and individuals with spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, amputees and various other neurological conditions. We strive to encourage members in their pursuit of maintaining and improving cardiovascular and muscular fitness, enhancing balance and stability, increasing confidence, and maintaining independence. By working within our Centre, students can apply their classroom knowledge to real-life situations and develop skills in dealing with special populations. There are various courses within the faculty of applied health sciences programs that include practicum components at the Bfit Centre.

Kinesiology Presentation

The Department of Kinesiology is one of the largest and ranks 9th among 45 Kinesiology schools in Canada. The department offers four different degree programs, all of which are in high demand. Degree programs are offered in kinesiology, science of kinesiology, physical education, and concurrent physical education/education. Courses encourage students to create, integrate and apply knowledge from the biosciences, social sciences, and humanities in the transdisciplinary study of human movement as it applies to health and performance across the lifespan. The Accelerate into Master’s (AIM) program in Kinesiology (concurrent entry into our BKin and Master of Professional Kinesiology) offers students the opportunity to earn both their undergraduate and graduate degrees in 5 years. The Department of Kinesiology at Brock is committed to providing students with an advanced understanding of all aspects of human movement as it applies to health and performance through innovative lectures and lab-based coursework in state-of-the-art research and teaching labs. The teaching labs are designed to complement our kinesiology curriculum, providing experiential education opportunities to our undergraduates. The research labs are home to the research of our faculty members and graduate students, with opportunities for undergraduates to participate in exciting and advanced research projects throughout their studies.

The Department of Sport Management offers an internationally renowned program with a focus on the application of theory, principles, and practices of business to the multi-faceted sport industry. We have some of the best sport management professors in the world, who challenge our students to build their capacity to manage, analyze, problem-solve, organize and lead at the highest level.

Experiential learning is a high priority in the Sport Management program. Faculty of Mathematics and Science First-Year Student Experience Tours

Please meet outside of South Block 204 – Look for the FMS tour signs — 1 p.m.
Please meet at the Biological Sciences booth in the Information Fair – Look for the FMS tour signs — 2:15 p.m.

On this tour you will see an example of a 2nd year Molecular Biology teaching lab in the new Cairns complex and will then visit the state-of-the-art greenhouse that is used by faculty for research and for our 2nd and 3rd year plant courses. From there, you will walk past the submarine doors of Brock’s Containment Level 3 lab where work on West Nile virus, Zika virus and other mosquito-borne viruses takes place. Also in the Cairns building, you will see where a number of faculty research labs are before you head across the bridge to MacKenzie Chown where 1st year labs are held. The tour wraps up with a trip to Inniskillin Hall where the CCOVI Research Institute is, but also where upper level labs in Microbiology take place.

On this tour you will visit the 2nd-year organic chemistry and analytical chemistry labs. You will see the instrumentation housed in our undergraduate labs that students obtain hands-on experience with and that you will be using as part of your undergraduate studies. The tour will also include a visit to the Cairns Health and Bioscience Research Complex where you will see our state-of-the-art research labs and instrumentation – Chemistry undergraduate students are encouraged to participate in research projects early on during their time at Brock.

Come join us for a tour of Brock University’s flagship research institute, the Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI). Brock is the only university in Canada to offer an undergraduate degree in grape and wine science (called Oenology and Viticulture). Join us for a tour to see the processing winery with fermentation tanks, our state-of-the-art sensory evaluation laboratory, our leading edge biotechnology and analytical facilities with robotic arms and our wine cellar, which can house 44,000 bottles. The hands-on experience students receive in grape and wine science and their interaction with industry during their studies leads to our 96% job placement rate upon graduation.
